The Hidden Dangers of Space Heaters: How to Stay Safe This Winter
1/29/2025 (Permalink)
As temperatures drop on the East Coast, many homeowners turn to space heaters for extra warmth. While these heaters are convenient, they can also pose a threat as fire hazards if not used properly. Every year, space heaters are responsible for thousands of house fires, leading to property damage, injuries, and even fatalities.
How are They Dangerous and What Steps Can You Take to Prevent a Fire?
Fire Hazards – Space heaters can ignite nearby furniture, curtains, or bedding if placed too close. This is the leading cause of fires started by space heaters. Be sure to leave at least 3 feet of space around the heater at all times. This will prevent it from being too close to other objects.
Electrical Issues – Using a space heater with an extension cord can lead to an electrical fire. Plug the heater directly into the wall to prevent this.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Some older space heaters, such as kerosene models, can produce carbon monoxide, which if not properly ventilated, can lead to death. Never leave a heater unattended.Shut off the heater before you leave a room or go to sleep.
Tip-Over Risk – If knocked over by pets or children, space heaters can quickly ignite flooring or other flammable materials. Just like the above make sure you are close by to fix the heater if it has fallen over. You can also get heaters that have an auto shut-off when they tip over!
